What is laser therapy?

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment for pain relief. Low-level laser (light) therapy, or LLLT, is a proven treatment for reducing inflammation and edema and promoting musculoskeletal healing. Laser therapy is a cost-effective and low-risk treatment that can help address the source of your chronic pain.

At Clinton Chiropractic Clinic, we offer cold laser therapy (LLLT) and MLS laser therapy. Cold laser therapy is a laser-based treatment that utilizes light wavelengths. Cold lasers are often handheld.  MLS therapy is entirely robotic. The laser will be placed eight inches above the skin.

In both cases, laser therapy can alleviate pain without drugs or surgery.

How does laser therapy work?

Laser therapy works using a process like photosynthesis in plants. Your practitioner will use a laser to trigger a biochemical change within your cells that increases oxygen and decreases nitrogen and nitric oxide. This relies on mitochondria cells, often described as the powerhouse of the cell.

The laser itself is a device that generates light in the red to near-infrared region of the light spectrum. These wavelengths can penetrate the skin and soft and hard tissues to deliver treatment leading to pain reduction, tissue repair, and reduced inflammation.

Your provider will apply the laser to the identified site for 30-60 seconds a few times a week over several weeks. A single treatment may last only 10 or 15 minutes. This can vary based on the size of the injury. Treatment protocols may range from 6 to 12 visits depending on the injury’s nature or the pain’s location.

Risk to your eyes is minimal as the laser or LED will have a divergent or unfocused beam. There are no known side effects of this treatment.
